Slavery vs Freedom
But what does the Scripture say? "Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman." So, brothers, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman.
Slaves have no rights. They don't have any freedom to do anything they will on their own. They are merely a reflection of the master they serve.
Non-believers are slaves to sin. They are at the mercy of their sinful desires and have no way out. Slaves have nothing to inherit from.
Believers are saved by the grace of God. They are free from sin. They inherit from God's kingdom because they are God's children.
Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not listen to the law?
Slaves are fully subject to the law and are fully accountable to it. When it comes to judgment day, slaves don't have anyone to mediate on their behalf.
The free are also fully subject to the law, but the difference is that when it comes to judgment day, they have Jesus to mediate on their behalf.
But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through promise.
Ultimately, every human is born on earth, and therefore born according to the flesh. Everyone has sinned.
However, Jesus offers us the chance to die to our flesh and become reborn through promise.
