Continuing from John 15, Jesus provides His disciples with more assurances. Jesus is ultimately preparing His disciples for when Jesus is no longer besides them.
Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.John 16:7
Jesus has talked about going away before. But I find it interesting that He said it’s to the disciples’ advantage when He goes away.
It’s fascinating that the Helper (Holy Spirit) can only come once Jesus leaves. I do not understand the reason for this nor the theology behind this, but I do see the Holy Spirit as a huge advantage for Christians.
I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.John 16:12-13
I bet Jesus wants to tell His disciples everything. But the disciples are not yet ready to hear all of it.
There are many times in our lives when we are not yet ready to learn some truths. And it can be frustrating at times. I sometimes wish I just knew.
But I cannot. I must be patient, though sometimes I don’t want to be patient.
I’m just like a kid.
Jesus Has Overcome The World
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.John 16:33
This is truth. No matter how hard our trials are in this world, we should take comfort knowing that Jesus has already conquered the world.
It is, of course, easier said than done. When we’re in the moment of our life challenges, this can be hard to see.
That’s why we have the Holy Spirit. The Helper will remind us of this truth if we let it help us. The key is that we have to be willing.
Every weekend I write about some thoughts, life lessons, and interesting things I came by for the week. I'd love for you to join.
