The New Covenant
... [God] has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. – 2 Corinthians 3:6
The Jews received the old covenant in the form of the letter of the law. They thought that as long as they followed the letter of the law, they would be safe.
But Paul explicitly says "the letter kills" because it's naturally impossible to follow the letter of the law to the teeth. The letter is meant to show how imperfect we are and how much in need of a savior we are.
The Spirit gives life. The new covenant is in Jesus's death that for those who believe will receive salvation. We can receive Jesus's helper, the Holy Spirit, which gives life.
And you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts. – 2 Corinthians 3:3
I love the analogy between tablets of stone vs tablets of human hearts. It's the same idea as above–the letter of the law kills and is meant to show us our sin, while the Spirit gives us life.
Every weekend I write about some thoughts, life lessons, and interesting things I came by for the week. I'd love for you to join.
