Of Light, Not Darkness
"But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness." – 1 Thessalonians 5:4-5
There's a clear distinction between light and darkness. Light is associated with the day, and darkness is associated with the night.
Ironically, the Day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night, and those in darkness won't be able to tell when that is.
I believe it's because those in darkness are blind compared to those in light, who are able to shine light on the thief in the night.
Keep Awake and Sober
"So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night." – 1 Thessalonians 5:6-7
That's the best way to sum up this passage.
How can we prepare? Paul gives very clear and explicit instructions:
Let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation... (5:8)
Encourage one another and build one another up... (5:11)
Be at peace among yourselves... (5:13)
Admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all... (5:14)
See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone... (5:15)
Rejoice always... (5:16)
Pray without ceasing... (5:17)
Give thanks in all circumstances... (5:18)
Do not quench the Spirit... (5:19)
Do not despise prophecies... (5:20)
Test everything... (5:21)
Hold fast what is good... (5:21)
Abstain from every form of evil... (5:22)
